Podium – A Decentralized Social Network built on Radix
Last year, in Lithuania, Radix conducted their first Hackathon at Pillar Project’s Unconference. Out of the many innovative projects built during the Hackathon, one that had a particular mass-market application was Podium – a decentralized social network that is built to take advantage of Radix’s unprecedented scalability and end the toxicity prevalent on social media today.
Radix has recently run transaction speed tests peaking at 1.4 million transactions per second, which dwarves the current transaction speeds of other blockchains, achieved without compromising on decentralization or security. You can learn more about these tests here.
Is Social Media Broken?
The sheer volume of content shared on social networks is staggering. On Twitter alone, over 500 million tweets are sent every day. It is no surprise then, that social networks are fighting a losing battle to moderate themselves – fuelling abuse, misinformation, and harassment, which in many cases goes unchecked.
How Can Podium Help?
The Podium team maintains that user moderation is the only viable answer – that only the userbase itself can match this pace of content generation. Their User Moderation system is implementing the Radix ledger and constraint machine to transparently automate its three key features:
Bias Tracking – Users spend non-transferable Podium tokens to post content to the platform. These tokens are easily earned by liking/disliking content – ensuring all users provide the data required to (securely) characterize their bias.
Report Handling – Reported content is handled by unpredictably-populated, bias-balanced Juries who vote according to a series of tests – keeping decisions simple and consistent, while allowing a far more comprehensive rulebook than other platforms.
Reputation – “Integrity” is a measure of how consistently users uphold the platform code of conduct. More Integrity also translates into a larger platform – with rule violations costing Integrity, ensuring offending users suffer a material penalty to their platform influence.
You can see these systems in action with this short walkthrough video.
Radix powers the next generation of decentralized apps and platforms
Radix is a completely decentralized, scalable ledger which is ready-made for 7 billion people to use simultaneously. Andrew Carter, CEO of Podium, says that Radix’s tech is integral to their development:
“Podium was an idea we had been developing for a while, but one whose scalability and transparency requirements exceeded current technologies. When we met the Radix team in Lithuania and learned what they were building, Podium suddenly became possible.”
In July 2018, Radix hosted its first-ever Hackathon in Lithuania encouraging developers the world over to start experimenting with the Radix platform. Podium took advantage of this event to test out a basic prototype, with support from the Radix team. The development has continued and they hope to launch a beta version later this year. The full platform launch is scheduled for early 2020.
Podium is just one example of what can be built on the Radix platform. If you want to create the next Crypto Kitties or a breakthrough decentralized application, Radix can help to drive your success.
